Ohio State faculty were well featured in the nation's major media during August, scoring coverage from the New York Times to Good Housekeeping to NPR. This report reviews all of the major coverage of Ohio State in the top 50 U.S. markets (excluding reports in the Ohio media and athletics' game stories) and selected international outlets. News service distributions (Associated Press, United Press International, Reuters) cited in some items suggest probable coverage by other newspapers, radio, and television stations not monitored by the university.

New York Times, Aug. 19; NBC News “Today” Show, Aug. 9; United Press International, Aug. 22. Richard Solove, a longtime contributor to Ohio State's cancer programs, was featured for his most recent, unique gift to the university. Solove auctioned off his collection of 13 Rolls Royce automobiles, raising $14.3 million for the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, in addition to the university's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

New York Times, Aug. 26. Rene Stulz, professor of finance. Article about his research that suggests hedge funds are vulnerable to rapidly spreading losses in times of financial panic, which means many such funds can lose money at the same time.

New York Times, Aug. 4; International Herald Tribune, Aug. 4. Paul Nini, associate professor of design. Quoted in article about how text on cell phone screens is often hard for ageing baby boomers to read, probably because the phones are designed for teenagers rather than older adults.

Washington Post, Aug. 20. Lonnie Thompson, distinguished university professor of earth sciences. Article mentioned his research that found that the Qori Kalis glacier in Peru is rapidly disappearing, the victim of global warming. Thompson said the melting threatens the major source of water for many people in the country. Research Story

Washington Post, Aug. 12. David Goldberger, professor of law. Quoted in article about the legal issues involved in a heated zoning dispute that has raged for months between a D.C.-area county and officials for a local church.

Washington Post, Aug. 13. Richard Steckel, professor of economics and anthropology. Quoted about research that shows Americans are no longer the tallest people in the world, partly because diet and nutrition is not optimal for many citizens.

USA Today, Aug. 22. Rudi Fahlenbrach, assistant professor of finance. Article about his research that found companies that are still run by the men and women who started them tend to perform better in the stock market than do other firms. Research Story

USA Today, Aug. 10. Article noted that Ohio State researchers were involved in a study that found, in states that have deregulated the electric power companies, fewer than 10 percent of consumers have left their original power provider, while 60 percent of commercial customers have switched.

Newsday, Aug. 21. James Mulick, professor of pediatrics and psychology. Article about his research suggesting that ineffective or even dangerous fad treatments for autism, always a problem, seem to be growing more pervasive. Research Story

San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 27. E. Steven Roach, professor of pediatrics. Quoted in article about how strokes in children are not as rare as many doctors think. Diagnosis of pediatric stroke has improved in recent years, he said.

San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 7. Article recommends the website “Netwellness.com” as a good, authoritative source for health information for consumers. Ohio State is one of the partners for the website.

Detroit Free Press, Aug. 14; Orlando Sentinel, Aug. 15. Article about the Buckeye Bullet, a hydrogen fuel cell powered race car, designed and built by engineering students at Ohio State. The car reached 161 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.
