The cell above is positive for human papillomavirus (HPV), indicated by the clear area just outside the nucleus. At first glance, the cell below looks like it's positive for HPV, but it's not. The cloudy area surrounding the nucleus is comprised mainly of glycogen. In an HPV-infected cell, the virus destroys glycogen. Both cell cultures had been tested with the ThinPrep testing method.
