Geologists
at Ohio State University used software techniques to map the
location of possible metal deposits in the western Shield area
of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula, outlined here in red. The Sheild,
which contains a mix of mountain and lowland terrain, is about
equal in size to the state of Texas, and may contain large deposits
of metals such as gold, silver, copper, and iron ore. [Map courtesy

This map,
created by geologists at Ohio State University, charts locations
of possible copper deposits in Saudi Arabia, with dark
blue indicating a high potential that a deposit exists. The map
inset marks in red the areas that are already known to contain
copper. Using software techniques, the geologists determined
that the country contains more than 5,000 square miles of potential
copper deposits. [Map courtesy of Ohio State University.] |

that the country contains more than 3,000 square miles of potential
iron ore deposits. [Map courtesy of Ohio State University.] |
