Certain strains of the calicivirus (above), coronavirus (upper right) and rotavirus (lower right), pictured above, can cause gastrointestinal illnesses in humans, especially children. Linda Saif, a professor in the Food Animal Health Research Program and the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and a newly elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, is helping to develop methods for detecting and controlling such viruses.
