Research Communications, Office of University Relations
2001-2002 Progress Report

This unit is charged first with translating the successes of OSU research progress and conveying that to the public, largely through the national and international news media. Secondly, the unit provides public relations counsel to faculty and university leadership in the areas of research risks and controversy. The unit has a director, an assistant director and three staff science writers all of whom cover different areas of university research.

Research Communications staff serve a primary role within University Relations of providing research stories and other content to international, national, regional, state and local news media as well as to the other units within the department.

Total Research Stories:

The primary audience for this unit is a distinct cadre of science, medical and environmental reporters -- as well as editors of lifestyle sections and programs and feature editors -- who cover research and technology on a daily basis. In the last year, the staff of Research Communications produced

a total of 81 individual research stories for dissemination to these reporters, editors, producers and writers. This years total is a 13 percent decrease compared with last year largely due to the loss of one science writer this summer and the lack of filling his position.

Number That Achieved National Coverage

The real test of success, however, is what percentage of the stories resulted in news coverage of the research in question. The graph on the left provides a comparative look over the last six years at the number of stories garnering some national coverage.
