This electron micrograph of polystyrene shows bubbles solidified within the material. Some of the larger bubbles measure 50 micrometers, or millionths of a meter, across. Courtesy of Ohio State University.
By adding very tiny particles of clay to liquid polystyrene, Ohio State University engineers were able to make a very dense solid plastic foam. In this electron micrograph, the largest bubbles measure approximately 25 micrometers, or millionths of a meter, across. Most bubbles are 10 micrometers or smaller.
