Engineers at Ohio State University have invented devices that modify the turbulence in jet engine airflow -- a technology that could one day help reduce aircraft noise. These images show the results of laboratory tests of simulated engine airflow. For each pair of the images, the top image was taken with the devices switched off and the bottom image was taken with the devices switched on. A brighter color indicates a higher degree of mixing in the gas flow. Images courtesy of Ohio State University.
