Very Small Galactic Bulge Could Change Ideas Of Galaxy Formation

This infrared image, taken with the 8-meter Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, shows the center of nearby galaxy M33. According to Ohio State University astronomers, the image shows evidence of young and intermediate-age stars, which is unexpected; the central bulge region of a spiral galaxy would normally contain older stars that date back to the time the galaxy formed. The finding may expand current theories of how galaxies form. Photo courtesy of Ohio State University. A larger, high-resolution image (Tiff file) is available here.
